Fifteen-year-old Millie Knight will carry the Great Britain flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Paralympics on Friday night, watched by thousands of people inside Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium - and possibly a few more at her school in Canterbury.

The visually-impaired alpine skier, the youngest athlete ever to represent Britain at a Winter Paralympics, said she was "excited, proud and honoured" to lead the team into the stadium.

Knight is in the first year of studying for her GCSEs at The King's School and has been given two months off to compete in Sochi.

"This is the best feeling ever, I'm so excited," she said on being named flag bearer.

"I can't wait to carry the flag at the opening ceremony and I'm honoured to be out there representing ParalympicsGB alongside all of the other nations.

"I think all my teachers want to watch it so they'll be watching it in class."

Knight has received plenty of messages of support from friends back home, some of whom have jokingly started asking for her autograph, getting ready for the return of a mini-celebrity to their classrooms.

"I'm just a normal pupil," she said.

Penny Briscoe, the chef de mission of the British team, said: "Millie is a very talented athlete and an exciting prospect for the future, therefore she is the perfect representative for the team on this occasion."

Knight will be joined at the ceremony by her guide Rachael Ferrier and fellow skiers Ben Sneesby and James Whitley.

The remainder of the 15-strong team will watch it from their respective villages, with their competitions due to get under way early the following morning.
