O'Shea: The best team lost

Harlequins director of rugby Conor O'Shea accepted that his side were extremely fortunate to record a 11-10 victory over their London rivals Wasps.

A lethargic Quins had to rely on a Sam Smith try two minutes from the end to deprive Wasps of a deserved victory.

"The best team lost today without any doubt. We didn't play with any shape or form and won't play like that again," said O'Shea.

Quins' remaining points came from two penalties from Nick Evans and Ben Botica as they struggled to build up any momentum to their game.

"We gave certain players a break during the LV=Cup period and unfortunately we didn't hit the ground running," O'Shea said.

"We didn't hold on to the ball well enough but all credit to the players for displaying mental toughness and hanging in there to sneak a win at the end."

Despite the poor performance, O'Shea was not too despondent.

"We are still in the top four and have Newcastle at home next week," he added.

"Playing conditions will improve and at the end of the season this will be a golden result for us."

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young agreed with O'Shea that his team were the better side.

"Sometimes in sport, you don't get what you deserve, we were in control for the huge majority of the game and I feel very sorry for the players," Young said.

Wasps were in total control in the first half but failed to capitalise.

They led 10-3 at the interval with a penalty try rewarding their dominant pack. Joe Carlisle converted and added a penalty but they should have had the match sealed.

"We had lots of positions in the first half but we let too many opportunities slip. The forwards did very well but we lacked composure and were over eager in their 22," Young added.

"We gave them the opportunity to sneak it late on as our discipline let us down in the last ten minutes but we are happy with our performance and our bonus point."
