Favreau: Jungle Book will wow fans

Jon Favreau has revealed his take on The Jungle Book will honour the original film.

The Chef star will direct the live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's novel, which is due for release next year. Luther star Idris Elba is already on board, with a number of actresses in talks for roles.

"Idris Elba's going to be the voice of Shere Khan and we're talking to Lupita Nyong'o and Scarlett Johansson as voices for some of the other animals," he said.

"We'll be using state of the art visual effects to show a jungle and animals in a way that hasn't been possible before," he added.

Jon said his team are also keen to reflect the 1967 animated Disney classic: "It had some wonderful music and characters, and a nice tone to it that we're trying to capture as well."

The 47-year-old filmmaker, who has starred in the Iron Man films and The Wolf Of Wall Street, was keen to return to his indie roots with Chef.

"I like working on the big studio movies. You certainly have a lot more tools in your toolbox to tell the story with computer effects, big crews and big budgets, but there's a certain trade-off you experience between creative control and the size of the production," he said.

"So it's nice - once in a while - to get back to something that might be more challenging logistically, but creatively, you have complete control over it. That's refreshing."

And he hopes it won't be too long before he can revisit the indie scene once more

Jon said: "Honestly, I haven't written a script like Chef since Swingers, and that's close to 20 years. I hope I come up with another story that I can do on a small scale, because it was extremely fulfilling."

:: Chef opens in cinemas on June 27.
