The Coen brothers are to write the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks.

It was recently revealed that the Oscar-winning director and actor - whose previous collaborations include Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can - are teaming back up for the untitled spy movie.

Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed award-winning brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, known for their brilliant dialogue, sharp wit and distinct characterisation, have boarded the project to write a draft of the script.

The plot is based on the true story of James Donovan - to be played by Tom - a prominent American lawyer enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to go behind the Iron Curtain to negotiate with the KGB for the release of a pilot captured when his spy plane was shot down over Russia.

The film, originally written by Matt Charman, was set up last year but has gained momentum since Hanks signed up to star, and the Coen brothers will add further gravitas to the project, which DreamWorks hopes to begin shooting in Europe in September.

The film is one of a several projects Spielberg is currently considering as his next directing vehicle.

Other projects include sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse and the historical drama Montezuma. He is also committed to directing a big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's book The BFG.

The Coen brothers have won the Academy Award for best screenplay for No Country For Old Men and Fargo. And they have been known to take on writing duties for films they will not direct, such as Angelina Jolie's film Unbroken.

They worked with Hanks on the 2004 US remake of Ealing comedy classic The Ladykillers.
