Sandi Toksvig has collected her OBE at Buckingham Palace just days after renewing her vows with her civil partner in front of 2,000 people.

"It has been a heck of a week," the broadcaster said after picking up her award from the Prince of Wales.

"I think I need a holiday after these two events."

Sandi, 55, who presents BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz, was recognised for her services to broadcasting.

The Danish-born star has become a familiar face and voice since first finding fame three decades ago as a children's TV presenter. She is now known as a comedienne, presenter and author, and was asked by the Prince of Wales about what she is up to with her quiz shows. She jokingly asked him: "Do you want a guest spot?"

To mark the new legislation which this week saw gay marriage become legal in England and Wales, the star renewed her vows to long-term partner Debbie, who she previously entered into a civil partnership with seven years ago.

Of the ceremony at London's Festival Hall, she said: "We in civil partnerships have to wait for what we called the upgrade (to get married) so we renewed our vows on stage in front of 2,000 people - it was a small event.

"At the end of it we had 2,000 people singing Bring Me Sunshine and dancing. It was a great moment.

"It has been an extraordinary week I have to say."

Staring at her OBE with pride, she said "just look at that" as she spoke of her surprise in being honoured.

She said: "I have spent too long making jokes to think that anybody would think that is worth rewarding - so I was honestly completely overwhelmed.

"Yesterday we had a little event at the BBC to thank everybody because it is not something you do on your own. I would be a rubbish broadcaster by myself, nobody would hear me."
