Oprah Winfrey could be set to make her Broadway debut.

The former chat show host is in talks to star in a revival of 'night, Mother, The New York Times reported.

She would play a mother struggling to stop her daughter from killing herself in the new production, which will also star Tony winner Audra McDonald.

Producer Scott Sanders has confirmed he has been in discussions with Oprah about her Broadway debut but didn't identify the play.

"Oprah has had a long-standing desire to act on Broadway," he said. "She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress. She and I have been looking at a number of plays and roles in order to find material and a character that truly resonate with her.

"We've recently read something that we're both excited about but are not yet ready to officially announce the specifics."

Oprah, 60, is no stranger to acting, having starred in films such as The Butler and Beloved.

In 1985 she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Color Purple.

The revival of 'night, Mother is being planned for the 2015-16 season.
