Beyonce and John Legend made sure that Michelle Obama had an unforgettable 50th birthday, as they performed at the White House.

The Halo singer posted a series of photos on her Tumblr blog, including images of her posing in a Randi Rahm sequinned gold mini-dress and nude heels, as well as her petting one of the First Family's dogs Bo, reported E! News.

She attended the glitzy private party on January 18 with two-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, who also took a shine to the dog and to to the Obamas' huge Christmas tree.

Mary J Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Samuel L Jackson, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder were among the guests who attended the party.

"I am looking forward to saying happy birthday to her, being able to celebrate this great milestone in her life," said Samuel.

US President Barack Obama had been tight-lipped about the star-studded soiree. He previously teased: "It's going to be a rolling birthday weekend."

Musician Herbie Hancock revealed that the leader's remarks about his wife of 21 years were "touching".

"It was really beautiful and really touching. He said something - his voice almost cracked like he was crying. It was just beautiful, a husband speaking about his wife," he recalled.

It's not the first time that Beyonce has performed for the Obamas. She serenaded the political power couple during the president's first inaugural ball in 2009, and she performed at his swearing-in ceremony in 2013.
