Despicable Me 2 top 2013 film in UK
Despicable Me 2, featuring the voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, has become the highest-grossing film of 2013 at the UK box office.
The animated sequel is also the highest-grossing animated film of the year worldwide after it opened in the number one spot in 41 territories.
It has raked in over £42.6 million after seven weeks of release in the UK, and grossed around 435.2 million US dollars (nearly £277.8 million) internationally, pushing Tom Hooper's musical Les Miserables into second place.
David Kosse, president of international for Universal Pictures, said: "When we first saw Despicable Me 2, we knew we had something quite special on our hands. The Minions are a force to be reckoned with, and their mischievous nature and good-hearted sense of humour is what makes the film such a fan favourite.
"We're delighted that UK audiences have continued to enjoy it as much as we do," he added.
Directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin, Despicable Me 2 - which also stars the vocal talents of Russell Brand, Benjamin Bratt, Ken Jeong and Miranda Cosgrove - sees the return of villain-turned-dad Gru (Steve), his adopted daughters and the loveable Minions.
The film is the fourth biggest animation release of all time in the UK behind Toy Story 3, Shrek 2 and Toy Story 2.
