NELSON missed out on the chance of some early-season silverware when they lost on penalties to newly-formed AFC Liverpool for the Joe Fagan Trophy.
The Reds were formed earlier this year and will take part in next season’s Vodkat League Division Two.
In only their second friendly, Liverpool were given a tough match at Victoria Park against Nelson, managed by Jon Westall.
The visitors took the lead on 22 minutes, Martin Smeaton striking a low left foot shot into the bottom corner.
But with 18 minutes to go, Sam Heap levelled for Nelson, shooting through a crowded penalty area.
After 90 minutes the game went to penalties and Liverpool triumphed 5-3, with Nelson’s Lee Kershaw blasting over his spot-kick.
