CHORLEY’S Emily Taylor fired the best final round of the English Women’s Close Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale to finish fifth overall.

The 17-year-old England international closed her campaign with a stunning three-under par 72 on the Lancashire links.

Her round included five birdies and only two bogeys, and was only matched by her namesake Lauren Taylor of Woburn.

It meant Taylor, a member of Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club, was just six shots behind the tournament winner, Lancashire team-mate Kelly Tidy.

She was the pick of the East Lancashire entrants, with Pleasington trio Brogan Townend, Helen Searle and Catherine Roberts all making the cut for yesterday’s final two rounds.

The trio all finished their English championship campaigns on 26 over par.

Mellor-based Townend carded a final round 84, while Roberts went better with 79.

Searle, who was leading the competi-tion at one stage during the opening day, returned a final round of 79.

Tidy won a sudden death play-off on her home course, beating Dorset’s Georgia Hall with a birdie on the first play-off hole after the two golfers had tied at the end of regulation play on four-over par.
