SETTLE skipper Jeff Ellis is calling on his side to end the season in red-hot form after seeing their Ramsbottom Cup dreams cruelly exting-uished by Padiham at the weekend.
The Yorkshiremen had restricted the free-scoring Arbories side to just 162 on Sunday, only to fall 16 runs short in their chase.
Padiham will now face Ribblesdale Wanderers in the final on August 3 at Barnoldswick, while Ellis and his men are left to pursue the 20/20 Cup and a top four place in the league.
But Ellis, who joined Settle after 16 years at Lancashire League side Colne, is challenging his players to end the season strongly.
He said: “It was bitterly disappointing to lose in the semi-final because we should have had the game sewn up at half-time.
“We had them at 149-9 but then our pro, Bret Silvey, dropped a catch and they got 13 more valuable runs.
“But a lot of our senior players didn’t put a high enough price on their wicket and that’s what frustrated me more than anything.
“We were 70 for 0 and just needed three an over in the last 25 overs and we couldn’t get them.
“It was very disappointing but we have to try and put a run together and try and finish in the top four.”
And the skipper’s task will be made easier now that school is out for the summer.
He added: “A few of our lads were at Giggleswick School and they played their games on Saturday, which meant the likes of Tom Davidson, Eddie Read and Chris Gemmill weren’t able to play.
“But they’ll be able to play for the rest of the season so we’ll hopefully be able to have a bit more consistency in selection.
“We haven’t been able to field the same team twice in a row and it’s been tough.
“We’ve also missed Paul Ridgway. He tore the muscle in his bicep away from the bone after only one game and won’t bowl again this season.
“So I’m hoping that we get the young players back and be able to consistently field the same team.
“We have the ability, but we just need to start playing as a team.”
