SANDY Stewart is expecting wing wizard Wade Elliott to hit even greater heights in a Clarets jersey next season.

The 29-year-old will look to build on two excellent seasons that saw him reel off back-to-back Player of the Year awards at Turf Moor.

And the tricky wideman has already made an explosive impact in Burnley’s pre-season tour of America, bagging a superb goal in their opening match against Carolina RailHawks.

Although the Clarets slumped to a 2-1 loss against their US counterparts, Elliott stole the show with a mazy 40-yard dribble and strike.

The former Bournemouth man was in the top two of the Championship assists charts last season, just behind Stoke City’s Liam Lawrence.

He readily admits he should add more goals to his game, and Clarets assistant manager Sandy Stewart believes Elliott will deliver.

“Hopefully for us, that is the sign of things to come from Wade,” said Owen Coyle’s right-hand man.

“It was a terrific goal he scored, and that’s what he is all about. He loves to take on players, and get crosses in, but it’s also important he chips in with a few goals.”

He added: “The way he’s come back hungry in pre-season is really positive.

“Wade sets very high standards for himself and, at the moment, there’s no stopping him.

“He’s determined to come back even better next season, and that’s great for us.

“I think every footballer says that they want to get better every year and that’s the case with Wade.

“He can certainly still improve. He’s got in his own mind the standard that he wants to be at and he’s working extremely hard to reach it.”

Coyle was able to give a run-out to three of his summer signings, with Remco van der Schaaf, Kevin McDonald and Martin Paterson all enjoying debuts against Carolina.

Norweigan defender Christian Kalvenes was among the substitutes, but was pulled out as a precaution with a tight chest.

Kalvenes will now look to see his first taste of action in Burnley’s second match on tour against Minnesota Thunder on Monday night.

The Clarets are also hoping to field Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny, who is set to land on American soil this weekend pending visa clearance from his homeland.

And Stewart admits he can’t wait to see the international shot-stopper pull on a Burnley shirt.

“We are working on getting Diego in the country over the weekend,” said the Clarets assistant boss.

“With any new signing, you are always looking to get them integrated and to meet their team-mates, especially when they are from a foreign country.

“Everyone is looking forward to having Diego with us.”
