BEN Mee is determined to add more goals to his game after netting for just the second time in his professional career at the weekend.

The 25-year-old nodded in Kieran Trippier’s far-post corner to give Burnley the lead against Crystal Palace, although it was an advantage they squandered.

It was Mee’s second goal in his 132-game career, with his only previous strike coming in a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor for the Clarets against Millwall on September 29, 2012.

He has come close recently before that header against Alan Pardew’s side, hitting the bar on New Year’s Day against Pardew’s former side Newcastle, and he posed problems in the QPR area when attacking set-pieces in the Premier League victory over the Hoops.

Despite his paltry goalscoring record, Mee admits he wants to improve on that aspect of his game.

“I feel it’s one of my strong points,” he said.

“I get in there and want to get my head on anything I can.

“Sometimes it just falls for you nicely like it did on Saturday and luckily I made the right run, lost my marker and I saw it go over the keeper’s head which was great so it was an easy nod in.

“It’s good because some of the deliveries have been fantastic so it was great to get my head on it.”

Despite ending a 27-month goalless run Mee – who was dropped for Stephen Ward earlier in the season but returned in place of the Republic of Ireland international in December – would have been more than happy to swap his strike for a crucial three points in Burnley’s battle against the drop.

“It was good to get the goal early doors but I’d rather be standing here with three points than a goal,” he said.

“The lads are disappointed.

“It would’ve been nice to get the win but we won’t be too down about it.

“We’ll go again and pick ourselves up for a big game in two weeks time that we’ll be prepared for.”

The Clarets now have a free weekend after crashing out of the FA Cup in a replay at Tottenham, a game in which they also blew a two-goal lead, and Mee wants to use that gap between fixtures to try and put the recent slump behind them.

“As a defensive unit we’re disappointed with the goals we’ve conceded,” said the former Manchester City trainee.

“It wasn’t like us because we’ve been doing very well at the back.

“Hopefully we’ll get this out of our system and start putting in more good performances like we have been doing.

“We’re disappointed with it, especially with the manner of the goals on Saturday.

“It’s never nice to lose a two goal lead.”
