BURNLEY secured their first victory of the Premier League season as Ashley Barnes netted the winner at home to Hull City.

Barnes was brought into the starting line-up after being unable to even secure a place on the bench a week ago at Arsenal and the forward headed home Kieran Trippier’s 50th-minute cross to give the Clarets victory at the 11th attempt in the top flight.

Burnley came close to taking the lead inside the first 30 seconds of the match as Danny Ings was released by a lofted pass over the top before lobbing a shot inches wide of the far post.

They were millimetres from the opening goal 20 minutes into the match as Stephen Ward headed back George Boyd’s corner and Steve Harper made a fine save to keep out Ings’ effort from 12 yards.

But Hull defender Paul McShane then nearly turned the ball into his own net with a horrific sliced clearance, only for Robbie Brady to clear off the line.

Ings then had a shot wide from his own half as Harper was stranded out of position, but the Clarets could not find a goal before half time.

It arrived four minutes into the second period though as Trippier crossed for Barnes to head past Harper into the top corner.

It was Barnes’ first goal as a Premier League player. Burnley had not led a game since their opening match of the season against Chelsea and Hull piled men forward looking for a response.

But the visitors were reduced to 10 men for the final 15 minutes after Curtis Davies picked up an injury attempting an overhead kick, when the Tigers had already used all three substitutes.

Hull still pushed forward for an equaliser but created little and Clarets sub Lukas Jutkiewicz had to be denied by Harper late on, as Sean Dyche’s men secured all three points.
