A LONG-awaited project for cyclists and walkers in Holcombe Brook could become a reality - thanks to a multi-million pound Lottery grant.
The Woolfold Gap scheme proposes to complete the Kirklees Trail on the former Holcombe Brook railway line.
By extending it by a kilometre, and connecting it with the existing Woodhill bike path, it would offer cyclists and walkers a safe route from Greenmount to Bury town centre.
The project, expected to cost about £750,000, has been long-listed for inclusion in a "Connect2" lottery bid by Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity.
Connect2 is one of the projects bidding for a multi-million pound grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks: The People's Millions' competition.
The winner will be decided by public TV vote in winter.
Graham Atkinson, Bury Council's executive director for environment, said: "We are really pinning our hopes on this cash boost."
