KEEP-FIT enthusiasts were made to sit-up and take notice as Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson joined in a health class – for over-50s.

The 34-year-old took part in the Healthy Actions Group in Brierfield Library after handing members a cheque for £50, raised at his recent Pensioners’ Fair in the town.

The group, a joint initiative between Pendle Leisure Trust’s Healthy Lifestyles Team and Pendle Seniors’ Group, aims to improve the wellbeing of older residents in the area.

The Conservative was put through his paces by members including the chairwoman of Pendle Seniors’ Group, Audrey Westwell, and instructor Pauline Arnone.

Mrs Westwell said: “Andrew came along, donned his trainers and enjoyed the class – and by Jove, didn’t he do well?”

The group, which is open to anyone aged over 50, meets at the library in Colne Road, every Wednesday between 1pm and 3pm.

The £1 admission fee involves an exercise session, a chat and refreshments.

A Pendle Leisure Trust spokesman said: “The idea of the sessions is for people over 50 years of age to attend weekly classes to help keep their hearts healthy.

“The sessions are also designed to prevent them from falling and to help them avoid type 2 diabetes.”
