THE finishing touches are being made to new centre for vulnerable people in Pendle.

Community Interest Company Enable U is setting up home in the ground floor of Stanley Villas in Albert Road, Colne to provide a host of activities such as arts and crafts and cookery.

The idea behind the venture is to support people who have disabilities, addictions, are at risk of social isolation or have mental health problems, and to enable them to live as independently as possible.

Since taking over the former Pendle Council owned building has undergone an extensive facelift.

A new £10,000 heating system is now due to be installed with new windows being put in and carpets laid.

The centre will provide support to learn new skills, social activities and enabling people to tackle obstacles that may come across in every day life.

As well as this they will have a drop in centre for carers to access help as well as arranged sessions offering housing advice, benefits advice and other forms of support.

The venture is the brain child of John and Sandra McBeth who run Pendle Support and Care Services.

John said: “ We found through the support work we do that there was not much available for people living with disabilities in Pendle.

“We set up the C.A.M.E.L. Club to try and give people with disabilities the opportunity to learn new skills, brush up on old ones by taking part in activities such as cooking, arts, crafts and dancing.

“We wanted to extend our services and decided to create Enable U as a way of doing this.

"Since moving into Stanley Villas we have been carrying out extensive renovations. The upstairs of the building will be a base for Pendle Support while downstairs will be used for Enable U.

"We are creating a room that will be used for arts and crafts, we have a large kitchen that will be used baking and basic life skills such as showing people how to make a cup of tea or cook a simple meal.

"We are also having a games room which will have a table tennis table, a pool table and a football table. As well as this there will be a lounge area where people can go to read books, watch TV and play on a Play Station.

"We will also be continuing with the groups that we run across the borough such as our gardening group that we hold twice a week at Roaming Roosters."
