RESIDENTS who receive Housing Benefit but are still struggling to pay their rent may be able to get help from Pendle Council through the government’s Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP).

The council has added an online application form to its website to encourage people to apply.

Coun Joe Cooney, leader of the council, said: “Money has again been set aside for residents on Housing Benefit who have been affected by the welfare reform changes.

“If you’re struggling and you think you may be eligible, please apply now. We know there are people out there who haven’t applied and would be eligible for this top-up payment.

DHPs are specifically for residents who have a shortfall between the cost of their rent and the value of the Housing Benefit they receive.

The payments are for a maximum of six months and cannot be relied upon long-term.

All cases will be judged on an applicant-by-applicant basis and are based on personal financial circumstances.
