A THIEF stole two packets of biscuits because there was no food in the house, Burnley Magistrates’ Court heard.

Matthew Dwyer, 31, admitted the theft from One Stop, in Nelson, on September 15, with the offence breaching an existing conditional discharge.

He had not long been out of jail and was on a methadone programme.

The defendant, of Larch Street, Nelson, was told be could be imprisoned.

His case was adjourned until October 10, for a pre- sentence report.

Nick Cassidy, defending, said Dwyer was released from custody on June 18 and his partner was pregnant. The solicitor said: “My instructions are he hasn’t used any illicit drugs since he was released.”

Dwyer admitted theft, saying his girlfriend called him saying there was no money or food in the house.
