PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has led calls in Parliament for pensioners to have a fair and active life.

Welcoming the launch of the ‘Later Life Ambitions’ campaign which aims to ensure a fair, active life for pensioners, Mr Stephenson has co-sponsored an Early Day Motion calling on the Government and local authorities to do all they can to tackle the challenges facing older people.

The motion follows publication of the Later Life Ambitions Manifesto.

Co-authored by the Civil Service Pensioners Alliance, the National Association of Retired Police Officers and the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners, it sets out what policies pensioners want to see at the next General Election.

The manifesto includes calls for universal benefits to be kept, improvements to the care system including financial protection, better public transport, the building of housing designed for older people, and the continuation of the Coalition’s ‘triple lock’ policy – a guarantee to increase the state pension every year by the higher of inflation.

Mr Stephenson said: “There are more people now aged over 60 than under 16 and more than 10million people alive today are likely to reach 100 years old.

“This is fantastic but does have social and economic consequences that we need to prepare for.”
