A WOMAN had to be rescued from the overflow section of a reservoir after slipping and banging her head.

The woman was with two friends at Walverden Reservoir, in Nelson, when the incident happened on Thursday evening.

She was on the slippery overflow section on the Brunswick Road side of the reservoir.

Paramedics were called at around 7.20pm, and they called the fire service 20 minutes later to help get the injured party off the concrete overflow section, which was covered in water.

The woman was described as being ‘groggy’ after banging her head and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Dave Robinson, crew manager at Nelson Fire Station, said: “The overflow section was very slippery and the three people had all put themselves in a very vulnerable position.

“A triple extension ladder was used to gain access down to the overflow where firefighters were able to approach the casualty and take her and two of her friends to a place of safety.”

The incident came just five days after 17-year-old James Goodship, from Colne, drowned in Lake Burwain after getting into difficulty when playing on a makeshift raft with friends.

Following James’s death, Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson called for greater awareness of the dangers of playing in open water.
