POPPIES could be planted in Colne to commemorate the start of the First World War.

Colne in Bloom want to plant poppies at Primet Hill and Whitewalls as part of their efforts to improve the town this year.

The group is bidding for £15,000 in funding for the next 12 months from the Colne and District Area Committee.

Kevin Singleton, from Colne in Bloom, said: “Last year volunteers designed and planted the guitar bed, a new herb bed, a Titanic bed with perennials that show case the town and ensure continuous displays even throughout the winter months. This should also reduce costs in future years.

“Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure Colne is looking at its best, we plant all planters and maintain many of the perennial herbaceous flower beds dotted throughout the town. Colne in Bloom really is making a difference.”

As well as planting poppies the group wants to work on one of the key gateways into the town.

Mr Singleton said: “We are looking to improve the gateway to Colne from the Lidgett side of the town and this year hope to incorporate something to commemorate the start of the First World War.

“This is still in the initial stages and we need to meet with the parks department first.”

Other projects in the pipeline for the year include organising various litter picks throughout Colne and encouraging shops to display and look after hanging baskets.

Last year Colne in Bloom was awarded the Gold medal at North West in Bloom, and took a Silver Gilt medal at Britain in Bloom, missing out on gold by two points.
