A PHOTOGRAPHER is set to bring a road trip exhibition – which has been staged in India, Pakistan and Texas – to a gallery in Colne.

Fine art lecturer William Titley is behind the eye-opening odyssey from Lahore to the new Punjab city of Chandigarh, which will take place at the Foto Galleria, above La Dolce Vita, in Albert Road.

Once Lahore was the ancient capital of the Punjab, before partition in 1947 led to the Indians constructing Chandigarh, under the direction of famed architect Le Corbusier. And William’s 200 black and white images detail his journey from one renowned location to a garden city which has grown up since the 1950s.

The photographer, who works at the University of Central Lancashire and is part of the In-Situ collective, said: “The exhibition has been shown in India, Pakistan, Texas and around the UK and now, at last, it’s coming to my home town of Colne. The photos from Pakistan and India focus on these two cities, one, which is the old capital of the Punjab and the other, a new modern garden city for India.”

William will be giving a talk on his exploits next Thursday from 7pm and visitors will get the chance to ask questions later.

Sarah Lee, from La Dolce Vita, said: “It’s fantastic to get an exhibition with an international perspective but real local relevance here in Colne.

“Pendle is a place with a large community from Pakistan who have lived in or visited Lahore and this exhibition will be of great interest to them.”

Dr Julian Manley, a critic who has reviewed the photographer’s book, added: “His photographs take us through the meanderings of city spaces where people carve out roads of humanity.

“He juxtaposes everyday life with the institutions of a living past, the buildings of power, architecture and religion.”
