Scrap dealers must register with Pendle Council
2:18pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in Pendle
DEALERS in scrap metal and scrap vehicles will have to register with Pendle Council from October 1.
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 merges two separate pieces of legislation which currently cover these two types of operations.
It includes buying scrap metal for cash, which is illegal.
Mick Armfield, Pendle Council’s licensing enforcement officer, said: “Metal theft is a really big issue in Pendle.
“The Act will raise standards in the industry which, in turn, should reduce the levels of metal theft. Councils will remain the principal regulator, but the Act gives us the power to better regulate dealers.
“It means we can refuse to grant a licence to unsuitable applicants, and we can withdraw licences if the dealer is no longer suitable.”
Coun Rosemary Carroll, chairman of the licensing committee, said: “All existing Pendle licence holders have been contacted about the new Act. We’ll be sending out application forms to them around two weeks before October 1.”
