Hit-and-run driver left 9-year-old by roadside in Burnley

A HIT-AND-RUN driver is being hunted by police in Burnley after leaving a collision which left a nine-year-old child requiring hospital treatment.

The male driver of a black Seat collided with two children who were on a pushbike in Venice Street.

After getting out of his vehicle to inspect the damage, he drove off without helping the injured youngsters.

One of the children suffered only cuts and bruises but the other had to go to hospital with a nasty leg injury that requires a further X-ray.

Councillor Marcus Johnstone, who represents the Rosegrove with Lowerhouse ward, said it was ‘terrible’ that the driver had sped off without helping. He said: “Not stopping when you hit a child really is the lowest of the low.

“We mustn’t shrug this incident off.”

He added: “I would remind all drivers, especially during the school holidays, to stick to the 20mph limits in residential areas where they are in place.”

Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident, which happened on July 26 at around 2.30pm. PC Mark Darlington, from Burnley police, said: “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact the police.

“We need to trace the driver of the vehicle and we would appeal to him to get in touch so this matter can be resolved.

“Fortunately the children have not been seriously injured but it has been a traumatic experience for them.

He added: “One will need to return to A&E for an X-ray and both are being cared for by family.”

Anyone with information should call PC Darlington at the Road Policing Unit on 01772 410465, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

This is the mentality of some drivers. Check the car for damage, don't worry about the cyclist subspecies.

Wasn't someone killed over near Barnoldswick a couple of years ago by a guy who then got out of his van to see if his van was damaged before driving off and leaving the cyclist for dead? And THEN drove past the accident spot in the other direction without bothering to stop!

Cyclists have no chance whilst morons like that are allowed on the roads.

Appalling behaviour by this driver and if anyone knows him grass him up but happycyclist, unless these kids were riding a tandem would two on a bike not be considered dangerous or is this the norm? the driver needs jumping on for his callous conduct, maybe not his driving ability.

With a not fit for purpose law system the scum bag will get off, even though, the car was either stolen, un insured, DUI. etc illegal immigrant do I really need to say more, How can the courts keep banning people who don't already own a driving licence?? Lock em up forget about them and throw away the key. Oh and make the family feed him while at HM pleasure. It really is time we went back to draconian measures with these criminals.

You're right, RUI, two on a bike is dangerous and not the norm, and your point about the driver is valid.

How can the Police be responsible for when the L.E.T decide to print a story?

And in the absence of a crystal ball how are they supposed to find the vehicle or the driver without assistance from the public.

Your clearly just another cretin that's obviously received a speeding ticket recently.

Well said "Angry Bob" Perhaps people should focus more on using the information given by the police and LET to catch the low life that left those two little boys in the road instead of criticising the police!
Hope the two boys recover well.

So you think I'm the local plod do you because I'm knocking you for criticising the Police?
There's too many narrow minded stiffs like you out there who will jump all over the cops at the first opportunity, mostly because you have either been arrested or given points for driving like a tool, yet if your house got burgled or you got chinned you'd be straight on the dog to the old Bill begging for help.

A Wizard from Darwen eh? I imagine your best magical spell involves making your todger disappear into a close female family member.

I feel very sorry for this young child, I hope she recovers very soon.

But on saying that. The cowardly driver that mowed this young girl down if caught would be a waste of time prosecuting him/her. Why!! The judiciary in The North West Of England is a big joke, these no good judges will give the perpetrator/s a slapped wrist and tell them "NOW LOVELY BOY'S/GIRL'S I WILL LET YOU OFF THIS TIME."
