SHOPPERS in Burnley were able to step inside the town’s first ever knitted garden this weekend.

The woolly world, which featured crochet daisies, knitted roses and colourful bunting, was created at the St James’ Street Bandstand, in the town centre, as part of the Big Knit Day event.

People were invited to get their needles out and explore the unique setting, picking up some useful knitting skills along the way.

Volunteers were on hand to help knitting novices get started and make something simple for the garden.

Visitors were encouraged to contribute knitted insects, birds or toadstools to make the ‘yarn yard’ extra special.

Burnley’s Big Knit Day was organised by knitting artists Liz Noble and Judy Deakin and Burnley Council’s arts development.

Rachel Hawthorn, the council’s arts engagement officer, hailed it a success.

She said: “This event is yet another great way of encouraging people to use their creativity.

"Knitting has surged in popularity as people look for cheap and creative ways to make useful items like scarves, hats, cosies and decorative pieces.

"Like learning to ride a bike, or swimming, once you get the hang of knitting, the skill will stay with you for the rest of your life.”
