TWO hairdressers from Burnley are achieving their dreams after winning backing from the Prince’s Trust.
Sarah Melia and Claire Corps were almost thwarted by the credit crunch as banks refused to invest in their salon in the heart of Burnley.
But the pair were handed a lifeline by Prince Charles’ charity, and are now encouraging young women across the town to chase their ambition.
Sarah said: "The financial and practical support we have received is priceless.
“We want to show these young ladies that hairdressing offers an enjoyable and creative career with exciting prospects for self-employment.
“Often, the only person stopping you from achieving your dreams is yourself.”
The pair, both 27, were given a £2,500 loan and access to a business mentor to launch Unique Hair Salon in Standish Street.
Last week they used their experiences of becoming self-employed to inspire 12 young ladies from Burnley who are not in work, education or training.
The group of 14 to 25 year-old girls from Trinity Ward have experienced issues such as homelessness, long-term unemployment and truancy.
Some have struggled at school while others have already been in trouble with the law.
Stacey Alderson, 16, has already completed a college application for a hair and beauty course.
Speaking after the day with the duo, she said: “I’ve always thought about being a hairdresser and today has really encouraged me to go for a college course.
Claire and Sarah have done so well and I think it gives young women living in Burnley a chance to see what can be done if you want it enough.
“It wasn’t easy for them but they have achieved something really good.”
The young women are now taking part in an eight-week personal development programme run by The Prince’s Trust to boost their confidence, motivation and skills.
Sarah and Clair are now looking to offer a beauty service and employ more staff.
