A DAD who terrorised another father with a ratchet yards from the school gates in Burnley has been jailed for 20 weeks.

Akbar Ullah, 37, who was given a community order last December for producing cannabis, had blocked the victim in in his car, tried to open the locked door and then smashed the driver’s window, showering him with glass.

The victim’s wife and young child were in the vehicle at the time.

Appearing at Burnley Crown Court, Ullah, of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, had admitted possessing an offensive weapon on June 27.

Emma Kehoe, prosecuting, said the victim had been followed to school by the defendant’s wife, who had been shouting at him, saying he was a bad parent.

The victim thought his assailant was carrying a hammer at first, but it turned out to be a metal ratchet.

She said: “The complainant was terrified, both for himself and his family. The defendant just got back in his car and drove away.”

When Ullah was arrested on June 29, he initially claimed the victim had earlier tried to run his wife over. He told police he was trying to scare the victim, not hurt him.

Afzal Anwar, defending, said: “There is just no justification for what he did on that day.”

“He thought the complainant had tried to run his wife over and another member of the public had had to stand in the way.”

Mr Anwar added Ullah was not working as he was on sick leave, suffering from depression. He had separated from his wife since the incident.

Passing sentence, Recorder Peter Atherton said: “It must be clear in the community that conduct like this will not be tolerated.

“It’s wholly unacceptable to behave in this way.”
