THE brave mum who saved her children from a devastating blaze at her Burnley home has expressed her gratitude after kind-hearted strangers donated piles of new toys, clothes, and furniture.

Mary Disley and her two young children fled their home in Rosehill Road after a laptop charger overheated and burst into flames on her bed on Monday — leaving them with almost nothing.

The 33-year-old student, who turns 34 tomorrow, was praised by the fire service after waking Isabel, eight, and six-year-old son Ayrton and getting them outside to safety.

In the aftermath of the blaze, which gutted the upstairs of her mid-terrace home, the community rallied around — with dozens of donations being handed in to Barrowford Primary School and local businesses.

Mary, who moved into a temporary home in Manchester Road yesterday, said she had been overwhelmed by the relief efforts.

The social science student said: “It’s been an unbelievable response. I just can’t explain it. I’m so grateful. I just can’t stop crying and it’s not about the fire, I just can’t believe how much everybody has done for us.”

It will be around six months before Mary and her children can move back home, which also suffered severe water damage to the downstairs.

The young mum, who also rescued the family's pet dogs from the fire, praised social landlord Calico for its work in re-homing her temporarily.

She said: “A lady called Vicky found us a house. I rang the council and they said to get to Calico. Vicky came and said it was not her department but she would try her best to get us accommodation. One of the workers there also donated an Xbox for Ayrton.”

Gill Watson, who helps run a food bank at Barrowford Primary School, has been organising the relief effort online.

Writing on Facebook, she said: “Who would have thought that posting for help for Mary would get such a massive response?

“Someone had even been out and bought new clothes and Lego for Ayrton. I have collected boy’s bedroom furniture from the dinner lady, and had offers of fridge freezers, a cooker, sofa, bed, light fittings and dog food; even a fully-serviced caravan .

“You are all amazing and you’ve done this without needing any form of recognition.”
