A NEW ‘affordable’ housing estate could be about to take shape on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal behind a Burnley college complex.

Fifty homes have been pencilled in for land at the top of Grey Street, Daneshouse, by Great Places Housing Group, bordering the Barden Lane campus.

Land which once housed the former Reedley Hallows, and is now mostly overgrown grassland, would be reclaimed for the ambitious scheme.

Under their plans 25 two-bedroom, 20 three-bedroom properties in a variety of styles and five four-bedroom homes would be delivered.

An open day was held for the proposed estate at the Chai Centre last month and although only five residents turned up, all are said to have been supportive of the development.

Architect Ruth Walker said: “The project meets the regeneration objectives to revitalise the housing market in key neighbourhoods in Burnley.”

Company officials say that the properties will be allocated to tenants in partnership with Burnley Council, to meet a ‘demand’ for two, three and four- bedroom properties in the area.

The same group has previous involvement with regeneration efforts in Daneshouse, initially on a site halfway down Grey Street.

Eighteen homes were constructed, partly funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, with six three and four-bedroom ‘affordable’ properties included, between Nichol Street and Hurtley Street.

Those homes were offered on a shared ownership basis, with residents able to get a foot on the housing ladder for just £35,000.

And more recently the developer was involved in bulldozing the former Queen’s Mill, between Cameron Street and Elm Street, for another 18 family home development.
