A COUPLE and their two bull terriers had to escape their home when a fire started in the kitchen.

The blaze happened shortly before 10am this morning in Hobart Street, Burnley.

Firefighters said they spent around 45 minutes at the house putting out the flames caused by electric fan heater that had been left on.

Watch manager Neil Ashworth said: “When we got on the scene, two people had evacuated with two dogs.

“The house was completely smoke logged with thick black smoke.”

The firefighter also urged people to check they have a working smoke alarm in their home.

He said: “These people were alerted to the fire because of the noise - they heard something dropping off.

“Fortunately in this case there were no injuries and the couple did the right thing.

“When they discovered the fire, which woke them up, they evacuated and waited outside for us to arrive.”
