A TRIO of bright Burnley students have been accepted on to courses at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Thomas Whitham Sixth Form students Sarah Thorne, Rosie Durkin and Muthassir Hussain have received offers from the universities to start their degrees in October.

Sarah, who went to Blessed Trinity RC College, has been offered a place to read Natural Sciences at Girton College, Cambridge.

Former Hameldon Community College student Rosie has been offered a place at Magdalen College, Oxford, to read English.

Muthassir, a former Sir John Thursby student has been made an open offer from Oxford University to read Engineering Sciences.

Stuart Smith, headteacher at Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, said: “All three started their first year at secondary school at the beginning of Burnley’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

“There was a great upheaval at that time, with much learning on split sites, yet these three have performed marvellously and shown what can be achieved.”
