Parking bay plea to help Colne shop owners
A COUNCILLOR has called for extra parking bays to be installed in Albert Road, Colne.
There are currently only a limited number of parking bays on the road.
Some shops have bays nearby, while others do not.
Coun Ian Tweedie said he had been approached by a group of shopkeepers near to Spring Lane who were keen to get some extra bays installed.
He said: “The shop-keepers on this part of Albert Road cannot see why there should not be a parking bay installed outside their shops.
“There are such parking bays outside other shops on Albert Road and I totally agree that we need to help Colne shopkeepers as much as we can in order to keep our town an alive and vibrant shopping centre.
“As there is no parking near these shops a lot of people end up driving past and park in the town centre, and then don’t come back down to visit these shops and they end up missing out.
“It is important that shops are given the best chance possible to succeed and this would help a lot of businesses.”
Coun Tweedie has added the item to the agenda for next month’s Colne Area Committee meeting.
And officers at Pendle Council are asking the highways departments at Lancashire County Council to look at the issue.
Coun Tweedie said: “Although Albert Road is a conservation area, there is no reason why parking bays should not be installed in a way sympathetic to the architecture.”
