Barnoldswick disabled group to rate shops access

A DISABILITY group in Barnoldswick has launched a scheme to rate shops that offer disabled-friendly access.

West Craven Disability Forum launched the idea because of difficulties disabled people had in and around the town.

Under the scheme, any shop that meets three out of five criteria will be declared disabled-friendly and given a badge to display.

The five criteria are an access ramp to the premises, an outside doorbell at wheelchair height, good access around the inside of the premises, friendly and helpful staff and a white line on the edge of door step.

Coun Jenny Purcell said: “The disability forum has addressed other issues like getting new drop curbs installed, damaged ones repaired, potholes filled, pavements levelled and braille signs put on public conveniences.

“Another area of concern is the number of advertisement boards that are obstructing the pavements.

“We wonder if business owners realise how dangerous these boards can be to disabled and partially sighted people.”
