FENCING could be put up around a school which has suffered £16,500 worth of damage in the past two years.

The need for the fencing at Heasandford Primary School in Burnley has increased after Bramall Construction started a £500,000 scheme on re-roofing of the building.

A spokesman for the school said: “High levels of intrusion into the site have increasingly made the need for an effective enclosure to the site a paramount requirement, particularly as any development of the grounds to provide amenities for the children would be left at risk of damage.

“Currently Bramall Construction is undertaking a £500,000 project for the re-roofing of the school.

“Reports show that the damage to the existing roof has been caused by the high levels of intrusion, resulting in the requirement for the three metre high fencing.

“The existing stone retaining wall is in very poor condition and in some areas a danger to the pupils, teachers and public alike. This will be addressed within the proposed fencing project and made safe.

“A three-metre high fence is required as it will stop balls getting kicked out of the playground and being lost.

“The majority of the £16,500 spent on repairs has been as a result of damage to the roof, including replacing all the lead on site in 2010 at a cost £4,000.

Since April, 2010 the school has record 68 incidents of intrusion on the premises.

Planners at Lancashire County Council will make a final decision on the plans later this month.
