A NEW Tesco superstore in Padiham would lead to the closure of Several town centre businesses, the first day of a planning appeal was told today.
The company is appealing Burnley Council’s decision to turn down plans for a 30,000sq ft store in Wyre Street.
The first day of a four-day hearing heard legal teams clash over the impact the store would have on the town centre, its designs and its impact on traffic.
John Hunter, representing the council, said it was likely that “several existing stores and retailers, and in particular some of the independents that represent something of the best that the town centre currently has to offer, would be forced to close.
“In this way, the size of the proposal means that what Tesco are proposing quite unnecessarily throws the baby out with the bath water, and only to the benefit of Tesco itself.”
Plans for the eco-store, which would employ 150 people and lead to the closure of the nearby Tesco Express, were rejected in March, against advice from planning officers.
Patrick Clarkson QC, representing Tesco, said: “This store would provide a much needed retail support for Padiham as it is so close to the town centre it would be part of it.
“It would energise the town centre and provide an economic stimulant in an area of multiple deprivation, it would bring people to the town centre.
“Town centre trading at its current level badly needs a boost.”
Mr Clarkson said that a lot of traffic and custom leaves Padiham to do a major shop at the moment, and a superstore so close to the town centre would stop that.

people vote with there feet. if they like it they will go, if they don't, they won't. there are plenty of examples of little shops doing well, next to big supermarkets. value the customer, make your shops nicer to be in. at the moment there are quite a few scruffy shops in padiham. be unique like whalley or clitheroe or howarth.

Tesco claim "much needed retail support" A multiple of this size supports no-one only itself. Wake up Padiham residents look around you at high streets throughout North, they are nothing but clones full of Charity shops, others peddling cheap tat and worse MANY MORE boarded up just to become targets for vandals, dossers and drop outs. Do you want to see the main street through Padiham looking like this?? The so called 150 jobs created won't be proper ones simply time sharing, part-timers and all paid within the lowest range possible. It may sound good on paper and in people's wishes - In reality dreams turn into nightmares where supermarket conglomerates are concerned in respect of locals. All they want is your cash not your aspirations. Burnley a prime example, there isn't a major road through that is not severely affected by Supermarkets e.g Colne Rd Lidl and then Sainsburys, Active Way Sainsbury, Asda, Aldi then Netto. All create massive traffic delays because traffic lights have been installed to accommodate these businesses. Try moving through Burnley between 13:00 & 17:00hrs Fridays, Saturdays 09:30 to 16:30hrs (make sure your well stocked with petrol) When you shop at these places who will you ask perhaps "How do you cook this fish/meat or Those potatoes last week weren't good have you anything different" You'll soon find out anonymous plastic trays where the food (in respect of the meat/fish/chicken) has been pumped up to as much as 7.5% with water, just lift the trays and tilt them.

I get the impression that the main opponents are the businesses in Padiham who have taken advantage of local people for so many years.
Try shopping in Padiham on a Saturday afternoon or on a Tuesday. The place is closed!
Traffic problems would be no greater than they were when Main Gas etc were on the site with HGV and staff coming and going all day.
Let's have this store to benifit the people.
