£49,000 grant for new archive of Clarets memories

AN EXHIBITION sharing stories and memories of Burnley Football Club and its supporters is to go ahead following a £49,000 grant from the lottery.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the money to Creative Clarets, a project that will record the memories of the characters, rituals, traditions, souvenirs and superstitions associated with the club.

It is hoped the exhibition, which will be based at Towneley Hall, will act as an archive for the future, as well as a celebration of the past and the journey the team, and the town, has been on.

Iain Broadley, an occupational therapist from Lancashire Care NHS Trust, is the Clarets fan who came up with the idea.

He said: “We are delighted the Heritage Lottery Fund has acknowledged the importance of creating this archive for the town.

“Burnley has become defined by its football team and its long history of highs and lows, from winning the First Division championship in 1959-60, to being one game away from being relegated from the Football League in 1987.

“As this season has shown, these events are reflected in the mood of the town. Football really matters for Burnley.”

The project will bring the town’s residents together and help to foster a sense of community. Workshops will be run across the town, in tandem with local not-for-profit company A Good Read, and local clubs and societies.

Mr Broadley said: “Workshops will teach participants the finer points of taking photos, making films, recording stories and songs, creating pictures, or textiles, and writing stories, or poems.

“The workshops will be free and open to all, though there will be a particular emphasis on helping those who have health problems, are out of work, or are undergoing some other stressful situation.”

The exhibition is set to open later this year. For more information, or to volunteer to help, call 01282 414287, or see Mr Broadley at Burnley Restart, in Duke Bar.

I hope this concentrates on the early years of the club. If it covers the period since 1976 it would make for very depressing reading.

what a joke .Surely the club could have stumped up some money instead of wasting the lottery fund on such drivel it means nothing .People are dyeing and being made homeless in Burnley and the fund gives some money to some tosser idea bizarre

Dave : this is not an English writing competition. Most people compile their message rapidly which means there are often typographical errors which a more measured response would eradicate.

Unfortunately whether we like it or not, whether it is accurate or not, the above posts fairly reflect how other supporters perceive us. I live and work in an area where there are supporters from a wide range of clubs, and have previously worked near London, the Midlands and Scotland.

I have consistently found for over tewnty-five years that these diverse sets of supporters are either scarcely aware of Burnley FC ( which is hardly surprising given its modern history) or having met our supporters regard them as delusional with no real grasp of the club's (very low)standing in English football.

The above posts may appear poorly written and expressed; but in my extensive experience they accurately represent what other supporters think of the club and us having had contact with our support.

Apologies for these painful but thoroughly researched comments.

What joy to read clear and sensible comments for a change. I must confess that sometimes my fingers press the keys quicker than my brain works, resulting in the typographical errors common in most contributions to these pages.
But your comments show that it is possible to amuse, educate and be sensible, without resorting to bad language and vile suggestions.
The history of BFC is just as important to Burnley fans as the Rovers is to us. So, any efforts to record it is good. Although as others may suggest Burnley's historical acheivements may be a little limited and £49,000 could be used more sensibly.

Good for Burnley though - getting money in. And to spend on helping people come together to create something that nearly everyone in Burnley will appreciate.

I moved here from Liverpool a year ago and one thing was that excited me is that East Lancashire is a real football area.

Burnley, Blackburn and Accrington provided three of the founder members of the Football League, the oldest and most famous in the world.

The three towns have famous clubs with a great tradition that deserves to be cherished (even when things on the pitch don't go well).

I think this project is a great way to get ordinary people to tell the story of their club. Players come and go, managers come and go, chairmen and owners come and go, only the club and the fans are permanent.

I hope that this project is a success and leads to other similar ones for all the football clubs in the area.

They should spend the money on replacing the old wood seats in the away end!

Most uncomfortable ground in the league!

A great idea. I lived in London for 30 years and most of the people knew of my beloved home town because of the football club's prominence since being one of the original 12 members of the Football League. I'm back in Burnley now, and my pride in both town and football club remains undiminished. Up the Clarets Creative!
