BLACKBURN Rovers boss Graeme Souness went on a special spying mission to Scandinavia last night as he prepares to step up his plans for next season.

The Ewood chief is believed to have gone to Norway to watch Rosenborg beat Odd Grenland 2-0 in Trondheim.

But his two transfer targets would not appear to be Norwegian international defenders Bjorn Bragstad and Andre Bergdolmo, who have previously been linked with a move to Ewood.

Rovers chief executive John Williams confirmed Souness was in Scandinavia and revealed the pair are set to sit down today to discuss possible targets.

And a possible transfer move could be imminent as Rovers look to re-build following a disastrous season.

Ever since Souness's arrival at Ewood, scouting missions have been increased throughout Europe in a bid to find the talent to launch a genuine promotion challenge.

And the boss is clearly leaving no stone unturned as he prepares for a summer of transfer activity both in and out of the club.

He is certainly in the market for a striker but he has hinted there is likely to be a number of new signings. "I'm not just looking for a striker, I'm looking for several players," said Souness.

"And all our supporters must rest assured we might have played our last game of the season but we are pursuing many different avenues in a bid to strengthen the squad.

"I'm not prepared to say which positions, but we are going to be a buying club and a selling club.

"One does not need to happen before the other.

"We don't need to sell before we buy."

There will, however, clearly be departures as both Souness and Williams have gone on record as saying the current squad is top-heavy.

And though no players have as yet been placed on the transfer list, the manager has made it clear to the squad just who features in his long-term plans and who does not.

"Players have contracts and unless someone comes along and offers us money then there's not much we can do about it," said Souness.

"But footballers are more intelligent than people give them credit for and there are players at the club who have already worked out for themselves that they are not part of my long term plans.

"I still believe I've got an assortment of talented players here, though, but it's my job to get the best out of them."
