GENERATIONS of Bacup children have been taught by Norma Houston who retires from Thorn Primary School at the end of this term.
Mrs Houston is now teaching the grandchildren of some of her original pupils.
She started as a student teacher in 1958 at St Mary's in Dale Street then after studying at college taught at the new St Mary's School in Tong Lane.
After living overseas for some years she returned to Bacup where she took up a post in 1970 at Mount Street School, Lane Head Lane, until the school closed. She transferred to Thorn Primary School on Cowfoot Lane. Former pupil Carol Raby, 21, said: "She is a a lovely lady. When I left Thorn, I really missed her. Years later I was delighted to learn she would be teaching my daughter, Marilyn."
Mrs Houston said: "I have enjoyed my job -- especially teaching the younger children. It is very satisfying to see such a change in them over their first year. They say a child learns more in the first year at school than in any other and it's great to feel a part of that.
"The job has changed immensely over the years. Now there is more paperwork and record keeping. There is also a lot more in the curriculum, such as art, music and technology."
She says that after retiring she would like to travel more and turn her attention to her garden.
Mr Ian Andrews, Thorn's head teacher said: "After a long and excellent career Norma deserves to look forward to a well earned retirement. Teachers of her quality are rare. The school will miss her."
