YOUNGSTERS from Blackburn had a splashing time in the Lake District raising funds for charity.

They were among 16 teams to compete in Lancashire Outward Bound Association's Top School Challenge at its Ullswater centre.

The Year 11 pupils from Our Lady and St John High School, North Road, came second.

The event was organised by Lancashire Outward Bound to raise money to send children from across the county on its outdoor pursuit courses.

Competing against the clock, the four pupils battled through seven physical and mental challenges designed to build team work and confidence.

These ranged from paddling a raft across the lake, to sliding down more than 50ft on a terrifying zip wire.

Kerry Brownhill, 16, of Hastenley Avenue, said: "It's great to be doing something fun for a worthwhile cause and it's lovely to be in the Lakes."

Physics teacher Michelle Yates and Duke of Edinburgh instructor at Our Lady said: "The children put in lots of effort as a team and I am pleased they were rewarded for all their hard work."

Members of all teams were given a free ticket to either the Pepsi Max Big One or the Sony Playstation at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
