ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners across Lancashire are united in their condemnation of the county council after it agreed to request £55 million from the Government to fund a discredited road scheme.

The Heysham-M6 link, which would run along the Lune Estuary from J33 of the M6 to near Salt Ayre, has been rejected by government and planning inspectors on several occasions.

Emily Heath, Green city councillor in Lancaster said "I believe that it is immoral of the County Council to propose spending £55 million of public money on a scheme the main purpose of which is to enable goods to be moved from Ireland to the rest of Europe by lorry more quickly.

"They have spent years trying to convince local people that the road would bring jobs to Morecambe and reduce traffic in Lancaster, when there is as much evidence to suggest it will do the opposite. Fortunately they have not convinced the Government.

"It is time the Labour group learnt their lesson and concentrated on measures that will bring lasting improvements to transport and access to decent jobs for people across Lancashire."
