CRAIG Sargeson is hoping Rossendale United can follow the example of Vauxhall Motors and secure two successive promotions.

The 19-year-old hot-shot topped the NWCL Division One goalscoring charts with 39 goals which helped Dale clinch promotion as Champions into the UniBond First Division, but he thinks his side won't stop there.

"I haven't played at UniBond level before so it is a bit of an unknown quantity but Vauxhall won our league last season and went straight up again this season so I don't see any reason why we can't continue progressing," said the striker.

Rumours are that several League clubs are keeping tabs on the Rishton-born teenager -- one name that keeps cropping up is Wigan Athletic where he had a trial last season -- but he is keen just to see if he can emulate his goalscoring success in the higher division.

"The boss Jim McCluskie said he wanted two things -- to win the league and to have the top goalscorer of the season, and he ended up getting both.

"It was tight as I needed two goals in my final match to steal it from St Helens striker Terry Fearns.

"Luckily, I scored early in the final match against Flixton which calmed my nerves and then I got another to overtake him.

"I missed out by one goal last season -- the winner got 40 and I got 39 again -- so it was great to win the award this season. He continued: "I've now got 100 goals in my three seasons here.

"It is not a bad return and I'm pleased with that.

"Now I want to see if I can do it in the UniBond League.

"There are four strikers here, there is a real competition for places and I'm learning from the likes of Jim and Paul Heavey so it can only be good for me."

And there will be more scouts flocking to Dark Lane if he continues his success.

"I'm just concentrating on my football. If anything else comes up we'll see, but I'm enjoying myself at Rossendale," he said.
