DETECTIVES have issued descriptions of two masked men who failed to steal cash during an attempted armed robbery.

The raiders burst into Mosley Common post office, near Tyldesley, at 9.45am on Tuesday, brandishing a handgun and sledgehammer.

One smashed the glass partition, but the armed man who jumped over the counter failed to open the door to the living quarters and they fled empty handed.

Both were white men of slim build and wore black balaclavas. The first was 5ft 8-10ins and wore a white baseball cap.

The second was 5ft 6-8ins and wore also wore a white baseball cap, as well as a dark bomber jacket and jeans.

They managed to get away in a blue Astra, registration number H372 BNB, which was stolen from the Oakhill Trading Estate, in Walkden, and found abandoned after the attempted raid in Francis Street, Tyldesley.
