ST Charles RC of Rishton gained revenge on St Johns with St Augustines for losing out on the Sports Hall Athletics by winning this year's tournament by just two points.

St Charles will now represent Hyndburn in the Lancashire Youth Games while last year's winners had to settle for silver this time.

The Rishton school where the only team to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament, defeating West End, St Mary Magdalens, Hippings Methodist and Sacred Heart and scoring a blistering 22 trys in all.

St Johns, who also defeated Sacred Heart, St Mary Magdalens and Hippings Methodist, will look back on their crucial game with eventual bronze medal winners West End as the turning point.

In a close encounter, where the lead swapped hands on several occasions, it was West End who managed to score an excellent try with the very last action of the game -- which gave them the win and the bronze medal.

This made the final game a decider for gold and silver.

St Charles only neded to avoid defeat while St Johns with St Augustines needed to win by two clear trys to take the gold.

Despite some brilliant taging, they just missed out on winning as the game ended 3-3 to give St Charles the title much to the sheer delight of the team.

A total of 65 children took part in the event, many of whom had not much rugby playing experience --like St Mary Magdalens who picked up the Fair Play Award receiving tag Rugby equipment.

The event was organised by Hyndburn Borough Council Sports Development and Rugby Football

Union Youth Development for Lancashire. The Youth Games take place at Edisford Bridge on Saturday, June 30.
