THE little stars at Rossendale Valley are attracting the big clubs after winning their own inaugural five-a-side football competition.

Manchester United sent scouts to keep an eye on the budding Beckhams after the Valley boys turned on the style in a recent competition in Swinton.

And Sir Alex's representative must have gone away a happy man with a couple of names imprinted on his mind as Valley went on to lift the trophy.

Top scorer Richard Ballout, Nathan Taylor and Jack Cassidy all caught United's eye and could all be invited to club trials in August.

Ballout scored five times to guide Valley to the final where they met town rivals Rossendale United.

And it was Jack Brierley who grabbed the all important goal in the 1-0 victory.

The competition attracted eight teams which were split into two groups. The top two teams in each group qualified for the semi finals.

In Group A, Rossendale Valley finished top with JFC Dynamos in second place.

Islington Boys finished in third place with Haslingden 'B' fourth.

Rossendale United finished top of Group B with Akzo Nobel in second place.

Haslingden A finished third with Huncoat United fourth.

In the first semi final, Rossendale Valley and Akzo Nobel battled out a 0-0 draw.

Valley only secured their final spot after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out win.

Rossendale United reached the final after beating JFC Dynamos 2-0.

There was little to separate the two sides in the final and so it proved as Brierley solitary strike -- his second of the tournament -- settled the final.

The winning Valley side also including Ben Cockerill, Phil Boddy, Jack Cassidy, Matt Watts, Connor Glover and Jordan Warburton.

Organisers said the competition was a success and will now be looking to make it an annual event.
