TEENAGE paceman Kyle Hogg made an impressive Lancashire debut after Joe Scuderi had suffered a real scare in Durham yesterday.

Scuderi was taken to hospital suffering from pains in his chest and pins and needles in his arm.

"It was worrying but thankfully Joe's had an examination and everything is 100 per cent," said a relieved coach Bob Simpson.

Scuderi's place in the team was taken by Hogg, the 17-year-old with such a rich cricketing pedigree.

And Sonny Ramadhin's grandson responded by earning three for 17 from nine overs as Lancashire's young team dismissed Graeme Fowler's Durham University centre of excellence side for 251.

"We brought Hoggy up for the experience, but Joe's withdrawal gave him a chance and he's taken it.

"He got a breakthrough early on and then came back late in the day for two more."

Chris Schofield also seized the chance to put his season back on track with three for 53, Gary Yates picked up a couple of wickets on his first senior outing of the year and Gary Keedy had to settle for one as Lancashire's three spinners bowled 55 overs. But there was no joy for Mike Smethurst or John Wood, who limped off with a hamstring problem in his ninth over although Simpson said it was "nothing serious".

Andy Flintoff made a good start to his Lancashire captaincy debut by winning the toss, and bowled another nine overs to continue his return to full fitness.

James Foster, the young Essex wicket keeper who was a shock selection for England A last winter, hit an impressive 78 for the students, with Lancashire reaching 18 without loss in reply.

CUMBRIAN wicket keeper Mike Burns did Lancashire a big favour with an unbeaten 162 for Somerset against Championship leaders Yorkshire at Bath yesterday. Somerset resumed today on 371 for two, making a Tyke win almost impossible. Surrey, the other team above Lancashire in the First Division table, hit back at Ilford after being bowled out for 198, reducing Essex to 145 for seven. But Lancashire old boy Ronnie Irani did his best with five wickets followed by an unbeaten half century.
