WOLVES boss Dave Jones is weighing up a move for Blackburn midfielder Jason McAteer.

Molineux chief executive Jez Moxey has contacted Rovers about the availability of the Republic of Ireland international.

And the player's agent has confirmed he has spoken to the First Division giants about a possible move to the Black Country.

"Wolves have made an approach to Blackburn to see whether the player would be available," said the agent.

"Permission was granted and I've had an initial conversation with Jez Moxey.

"Wolves haven't made a bid, just an initial inquiry. It has gone no further than that."

Former Liverpool star McAteer has been linked with a host of clubs so far this summer after Rovers boss Graeme Souness made it clear he is ready to listen to offers.

Contrary to reports in the National Press, however, he has not been made available on a free.

So Wolves boss Jones -- who is also said to be lining up a £3 million offer for Preston striker Jon Macken -- has to decide whether or not he can afford the transfer fee, plus the player's wages.

Celtic, Manchester City, Sunderland and Newcastle are also said to be monitoring the situation.

But the player's agent insists he has not made contact with any of them.

"Anybody in their right frame of mind would be flattered to be linked with such clubs, but we have not had discussions with any of those clubs about his future."

McAteer became increasingly frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities after Souness axed him from his starting line-up towards the back end of last season.

And, with his international future now also in jeopardy due to his lack of regular club football, a move away from Ewood would appear to suit both parties.

However, the player's agent insists he's in no hurry to find him a new club.

"We're in no rush to find Jason a move. Blackburn are back in the Premiership and all Jason ever wanted to do was play Premiership football.

"So why would he be in a huge rush to leave at such an exciting time?

"At the moment his future lies firmly in the hands of John Williams.

"So, until I'm told otherwise, he will be at Brockhall on July 7, with his team-mates looking forward to playing in the Premier League."

Meanwhile, Rovers today denied stories linking them with a move for Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage.

The Welsh international yesterday claimed Rovers were among a posse of clubs who were said to be interested in taking him from Filbert Street.

"There has been a lot of speculation linking me with various clubs like Real Betis, Blackburn and Celtic which I find very flattering," said Savage. "But I am under contract to Leicester City for the next three years and, if they don't want to sell me, than I am more than happy to stay for those next three years." Ewood chief executive John Williams, however, insists the 26-year-old's name has never been mentioned by manager Graeme Souness as a possible transfer target.
