ST HELENS Sutton AC's track league programme seems to get busier with members taking part in two more matches.

The club hosted the latest round in the Cheshire League at Sutton Leisure Centre and there were good performances in a number of age groups.

In the under-11 boys, Darryl Banks ran the 100 metres in 16.4 secs and the 800 metres in 3 mins 4.6 secs, and reached 1.67 metres in the standing long jump; while Graham Morley ran 100 metres in 17.6 secs, did 1.57 metres in the standing long jump and threw the soft javelin 10.79 metres.

In the under-13 boys 200 metres, A. Gilchrist ran 31 secs, Liam Fairhurst 33.7 secs, Richard Robinson 35.7 secs, and Ryan Tapley 37.7 secs. Richard also high jumped 1.05 metres and put the shot 5.21 metres, while Ryan put the shot 5.21 metres. Michael Burke ran 800 metres in 2 mins 35.3 secs.

Only one boy represented the club at under 15 years, Tom Cheetham running 200 metres in 27.2 secs.

In the under-17 boys, Luke Benyon ran 200 metres in 26.2 secs and the 800 metres in 2 mins 21.9 secs and Gareth Owen ran 200 metres in 25.8 secs.

Three senior men competed, Tony Raffle running 2 mins 38.3 secs for the 800 metres, while in the 3,000 metres, Ian White and Stan Erlam ran 10 mins 40.5 secs and 10 mins 47.8 secs respectively.

There was a good turn-out of under-13 girls. Busiest was Sarah Green who ran 100 metres in 15.7 secs and the 800 m in 2mins 50.7 secs and long jumped 3.43 metres. Also running 100 metres were Sarah Lewis, 14.4 secs, and Laura Hesketh, 14.7 secs. Vicky Johnson long jumped 3.51 metres and threw the discus 11.91 metres and Kirsty Lewis threw the discus 7.55 metres.

In the under-15 group 100 metres Caroline Morley ran 14.3 secs, Anna Sheffield 14.7 secs, and Sarah O'Donnell 14.8 secs. Caroline also high jumped 1.20 metres and Anna put the shot 6.04 metres. In the 1,500 m, Jodi Nelson ran 5 mins 21 secs and Amy Parker 6 mins 29.4 secs. Jodi also put the shot 6.56 metres. Anna, Caroline, Jodi and Sarah then combined to run the 4 x 100 metres relay in 56.8 secs.

Only Catherine Lambert competed in the senior events, long jumping 4.14 metres.

The men's team travelled to Bebington Oval for the second match in the Northern Men's League and covered a remarkable number of events.

Leading the way was Alan Geraghty, who tackled all three disciplines. In the 100 metres he ran 12.2 secs, in the 200 metres 24.5 secs, he long jumped 4.87 metres, threw the hammer 12.54 metres, the discus 11.40 metres and put the shot 6.45 metres.

Not far behind was club captain, Ray Vose, who put the shot 7.95 metres, threw the discus 24.23 metres, the hammer 10.69 metres and the javelin 27.79 metres.

Sprinter Gareth Owen ran the 100 metres in 12.7 secs, the 200 metres in 25.6 secs and long jumped 4.11 metres.

Barry Cunliffe ran the 800 metres in 2 mins 8.7 secs, the 1,500 metres in 4 mins 46 secs, and high jumped 1.50 metres. And David O'Donnell ran 1,500 metres in 4 mins 51.2 secs, the 400 metres hurdles in 75.1 secs, and triple jumped 11.18 metres.

Junior Luke Benyon ran 400 metres in 58.5 secs, 800 metres in 2 mins 17.1 secs, and high jumped 1.60 metres.

Ever-willing veteran Stan Erlam ran 400 metres in 65.5 secs and the 5.000 metres in 18 mins 59.1 secs, an event in which Richard Farrar ran 16 mins 35.6 secs.

The sprinters combined to run the 4 x 100 m in 53 secs.

On the road, John Irwin and Janet Holmes competed in the hilly Buckley, North Wales, 5-mile race, John running 39 mins 28 secs, and Janet 40 mins 37 secs to win the prize for the first lady over 45 years.

Two other veterans in action were John Clare who ran the Chorley 4-mile race in 29 mins 28 secs and Trevor Prescott who ran the Wythenshaw Park, Manchester, 5-miler in 42 mins 36 secs.

Training for all ages and abilities continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Sutton Leisure Centre, Elton Head Road.
