DOZENS of cyclists are putting themselves through their paces ready for a 55-mile ride to Blackpool in aid of Bury Hospice.

Around 100 people from the borough are expected to set out on the journey on Sunday July 8 for the event dubbed the "Famous 55" challenge.

Organiser Terry Johnson, from Prestwich, said there was still time to enter.

He said: "Police at Radcliffe and Whitefield have entered, and the Village Hotel in Prestwich, which is sponsoring the event, has put in a strong team. My own team of ten are also raring to go.

"We are still looking for interest from the fire and ambulance services, schools, hospitals, social services, members of gyms and health clubs, and local companies."

He said people could enter as late as the morning of the event, which sets off from Manchester Town Hall, finishing up in the resort's Stanley Park.

Around 4,000 riders will push off from the city's Albert Square, raising money for a wide variety of charitable causes. Anyone wishing to book their place on the charity ride can call Terry Johnson on 773 7448 or the hospice on 797 1748.

A charity variety night, featuring tribute band Abba Arrival, comedian Max Pressure and local girl group P6, will be held in aid of Bury Hospice at the Longfield Suite, Prestwich, on Saturday June 30. Tickets priced £9.50, including supper, are available from the Longfield Suite on 253 7227 or Terry Johnson.
