GIVING them a run for their money were160 athletes of all ages and sizes who helped swell the coffers of St Andrew's CE Primary School in Radcliffe at the weekend.

They raised at least £350 from a two-mile fun run which coincided with the school's popular summer fair on Saturday (June 9). The fair itself raised £2,491, a record amount for the event.

Attractions included a wide variety of stalls, tombola, cafe, games, a performance from the Bury Music Centre jazz band and a range of other activities.

Delighted headteacher Mrs Alwen Bowes said: "The summer fair is run by our parents' association and the £2,491 was the best we've ever raised since the event started around ten years ago. The fun run is organised by our joint action committee and around 160 people took part." Because of continuing foot and mouth restrictions, some farmland normally used by the runners was out of bounds. "We were very grateful to a number of residents in the area," added Mrs Bowes. "We had mailed them and asked them not to leave cars on the pavements. We got a lot of co-operation from them."

And pictured proudly displaying his medal after finishing in the top spot in the race is 15-year-old Chris White of Lever Street, Radcliffe.

Commenting on the day, she added: "It was very successful and well supported by parents and the local community and it was a warm day in terms of people's hearts!"

The money raised will go towards a new 16-computer information communication technology suite for the school.
